Costa Rica Medical Tourism

San José, Costa Rica – Conservative talk-show host Rush Limbaugh said this week he’d go to Costa Rica for medical treatment if Congress passes proposed reforms to the US healthcare system.

That might sound like an unusual choice, since this is a country with one of the longest standing socialized healthcare systems on the planet. Everyone here (including resident foreigners), are required to pay into the government-run health system, whether they use it or not.

But Limbaugh’s choice may also serve to advertise what many Americans traveling here for medical treatment already know: Costa Rica is a fabulous place for medical tourism.

“The Scholarship Fund’s objectives are to establish, maintain, and distribute scholarships received from persons, organizations, corporations, foundations, and philanthropies to Costa Rican children within the Nosara area who are in financial need.” --- A scholarship committee member

What started out as a vision has quickly evolved into a reality thanks to the hard work and dedication of some, and the generosity of many. The volunteers of the DMA scholarship committee have worked tirelessly to raise community awareness and to organize fund raisers. Thanks to their efforts and to the support from the entire Nosara community via donations, raffles, and attendance at fundraising events, the fund will be able to support several new scholarship spaces for the 2009-2010 school year!
